The CH5050 dual bay, simultaneous smart charger/calibrator is a standalone unit which provides the capability to carry out charging and fuel gauge calibration on any two “N-Series” Inspired Energy batteries at the same time. The CH5050 works with every smart, standard Li Ion and NiMH battery in the Inspired Energy “N-Series” portfolio irrespective of size, shape, voltage, or capacity. – So you can recharge a 12V NiMH battery while calibrating the fuel gauge on a 3.6V Li Ion battery if you wish. With its multi-voltage power supply, the CH5050 works throughout the world. Variants are available for use in North America (CH5050A) Europe (CH5050E), the UK (CH5050U).

A special version: CH5050CALA, E, or U is available which will adjust the battery state of charge to 30% for shipping batteries on their own under IATA Packing Instruction 965

Operation of the CH5050CAL is as follows:

To set the battery state of charge at ≤30% for shipping:
Place the battery into the slot. The battery state of charge will be automatically adjusted (by charging or discharging). When the green LED stops flashing & remains solid, the battery is at ≤30% SoC.

To calibrate the fuel gauge & charge to 100%:

Place the battery into the slot & press the calibrate button. When the blue LED stops flashing & remains solid, calibration is complete & the battery will be fully charged. Note: calibration times are long. Do not remove the battery part way through or the process will need to re-start


Smart battery packs have a highly accurate on board fuel gauge. Under certain operational conditions this fuel gauge may drift and begin to lose accuracy. The onboard battery electronics keep a log of this drift and the CH5050 reads this value from the smart battery when the battery is inserted.

If the battery fuel gauge requires calibration (Charger LED flashes red), the user can press the button on the front of the CH5050A to initiate a calibration cycle.

Battery fuel gauge calibration can take a very long time & if interrupted, the process will need to start again. We recommend only pressing the calibrate button if the charger indicates that it is required (Flashing red LED) and if you have sufficient time for the process to complete.

Recharge / Calibration Times:

Different battery packs will require differing recharge times. The times given below are for a full charge from 0% to 100% state of charge. They are valid for all variants and custom hybrids of each battery model. (For example the Ni2020AG has the same recharge time as the Ni2020HD.)

Why are the calibration times so long?

Two factors contribute to the long calibration times:
– The battery must be discharged through a fixed resistor. Higher voltage batteries will discharge at a faster rate than lower voltage batteries (Ohm’s law) this is why the 14.4V batteries recalibrate fastest & the 3.6V batteries are the slowest.

– The charge & discharge process includes periods of rest which enable the impedance tracking firmware within the battery to do its work.

P-Series batteries use a high-current, 7-pin D-sub connector. They are more rugged than the N-Series batteries - some of them are IP65-rated - they also are optimized for using cells with low internal impedance which excel in low temperature and high discharge current applications. They require the use of a "PH" series charger.
N-Series batteries use a 5-blade standard battery connector. They are optimized for using high capacity cells for maximum runtime. They require the use of a "CH" series charger.
